With the increasing move to delivery of imaging within the community setting, limited access to in-person radiologist support, and the common delays seen in reporting of routine scans, the role of MRI radiographers in identifying clinically significant pathology is key. Radiographers are uniquely positioned to review images at the time of scanning, contextualise them with the patient’s presentation, and determine whether expedited reporting or urgent medical attention is required to support patient outcomes.

This course will focus on the normal and abnormal scan appearances of the lumbar spine and brain, equipping radiographers to obtain the required images and effectively describe their observations. Additionally, the content will cover the identification of red flag symptoms, there significance and appropriate escalation pathways.

Alternative course date: Monday 2 February 2026

Course objectives:

  • To introduce the concept of PCE and its relevance to professional practice in current day MRI services.

  • To provide revision of relevant anatomy of the lower spine and brain.

  • To provide overview of common pathological appearances seen within the lower spine and brain.

  • To be able to begin to recognise normal from abnormal anatomy on MRI scans of the lower spine and brain, and how best to describe image appearances.

  • To understand when to escalate images appearances and better inform patient management.

Join experienced reporting radiographers who will share their knowledge and expertise, providing opportunity for delegates to review a selection of cases and discuss decision making.

Cases will be made available and viewable via limited time access to Collective Minds.

For optimal learning experience, delegates are encouraged to participate in a suitably quiet location and preferably via a laptop or tablet, rather than smart phone, to enable fuller interaction with the case review sessions.
